SCC Meeting Minutes

Crescent Elementary

January 28, 2026

Attendance: Angela Thompson, Emily Dyer, Will Osborne, Ashley Bourdos, Stephanie Laing, Becky Waddingham, Kierstin Draper, Sara McBee

PTA Notes:

  • Teacher of the Year nominations are now open – you can nominate teachers from past years as well, as long as they are still teaching!

Land Trust/TSSP:

  • Admin training on new Land Trust regulations is scheduled for tomorrow, January 29. There may be more rigidity around moving funds between categories, but we will be updated in the next meeting.

Behavior: Targeted small groups are in session to support students with specific needs, such as friendship, leadership, strategies for anxiety, and motivation. There are weekly meetings to go over support and resources for the kids and teachers.

Academics:

  • I-Ready Winter Data Report by Kierstin Draper
    • Between Fall and Winter, placements have improved in each category for grades 1-5 (Kindergarten not included with testing timeframes) for both math and reading.
    • Amplify will be replacing i-Ready mathematics during the day, but we are going to request that i-Ready can still be used as a before and after school resource and request to be able to use the testing for the data it provides.
  • Acadience Winter Data Report by Sara Mcbee
    • Acadience is timed testing (including ESL and ACC students) so can be slightly skewed. The testing results allow staff and faculty to look at where curriculum or instruction needs to be adjusted to meet growth goals.
    • For reading, the school has 38% well-below typical or below the typical pathway. 61% are above or well above the typical pathway.
    • For math, the school has 34% below or well below the typical pathway. 35% are typical or above the typical pathway, and 28% are well above the typical pathway.
    • Changes in those at or above typical pathway from beginning of the year
      • Reading
        • Kindergarten: 10% increase
        • Grade 1: 1% increase
        • Grade 2: 6% increase
        • Grade 3: 2% decrease
        • Grade 4: 2% increase
        • Grade 5: 6% increase
      • Math
        • Kindergarden: 23% increase
        • Grade 1: 1% decrease
        • Grade 2: 2% increase
        • Grade 3: 2% increase
        • Grade 4: no adjustments
        • Grade 5: 26% increase
      • The rigor of the testing sees a large shift between the second and third grade. This can be part of where the decrease can happen with reading where the Depth of Knowledge (DOK) being tested is shifted.
      • The biggest hurdle being seen with third and fourth grade is mathematics fluency. They are looking at ways to add back math facts in instruction where applicable, but practicing this at home can be helpful for students that are below or well below the typical pathway.

Concerns:

  • We are still monitoring enrollment. The district kindergarten and pre-k even had about 50 families attend. They provided a backpack for each student that attended. Crescent was one of the last open houses available, so there are enough left over backpacks for us to be able to provide one for each enrolled kindergartener next year. It’s anticipated that we will have more kindergarteners than this year, but unsure by how many currently.

Celebrations:

  • Crescent will be Fox 13’s “Cool School” of the week TOMORROW! Will be filming live in the morning. There will be a few “teasers” between 7 and 7:45am and then will have the following Crescent groups featured in two minute segments:
    • Crescent Dance
    • Crescent Orchestra
    • 2nd & 3rd Grade Writing Club
    • Crescent Garden Club
    • ”Firsties Friends” Club
    • Will have a plug for Maker Space and Stem Squad
  • Fox 13 will send a link later with compilation of recordings to share with the community later for those that cannot watch live

Action Plan:

  • Land Trust Goals & Action Items need to be completed by the end of March. We will keep goals on pathways of progress for reading and math and look at what action items will get us to meet that goal. Projected enrollment numbers will be given shortly, which has not been provided this early before.  With Bella Vista closing down, teachers will be absorbed where there are openings. Anticipating that we will be given 17 spots for next year, but we will try to get to 17.5 at the lowest if possible. The goal is to have 18 teachers (3 for each grade).

Future Meeting Dates:
