Did you know that only 4% of all the words in print today are truly irregular? When we consider what we call “sight words” that students need to memorize in order to read, we can consider that 36% of words can be spelled by the phonics rules we have learned, except for one speech sound (usually a vowel). That is great news in learning to read these words- they don’t all have to be guess work!
